For elderly patients or those with mobility issues, attending A&E for a suspected fracture can be distressing. Mobile X-ray offers a safer, faster alternative.
Suspected fractures are one of the most common reasons for attending A&E. However, for elderly patients, those with mobility difficulties, or care home residents, an A&E visit can be distressing, time-consuming, and potentially risky — particularly during periods of high infection risk.
Mobile X-ray services offer a safe, fast alternative. A qualified radiographer attends the patient's home or care facility with portable digital X-ray equipment, performs the examination, and the images are reviewed by a consultant radiologist — all without the patient needing to leave their home.
Common fractures assessed by home X-ray include wrist fractures (particularly distal radius fractures, common in falls), ankle fractures, hip fractures (though these often require hospital admission for treatment), and rib fractures.
At Radpid Diagnostics, our mobile radiographers are experienced in performing fracture assessments in home and care home settings. We work closely with GPs and community health teams to ensure that patients receive appropriate follow-up care based on the X-ray findings.
If a fracture is identified, the consultant radiologist report will clearly describe the fracture type, location, and any displacement, enabling the GP or specialist to plan appropriate management — whether that is conservative treatment, orthopaedic referral, or hospital admission.
