Pelvic Ultrasound for Ovarian Cysts — What to Expect

If you have been told you may have an ovarian cyst, a private pelvic ultrasound in Greenwich offers fast, expert reassurance without an NHS wait. Learn what the scan involves, how long it takes, and when you will receive your results.

A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the organs within the pelvis — including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It does not use ionising radiation, making it completely safe and suitable for women of all ages.

What Is a Pelvic Ultrasound?

There are two types of pelvic ultrasound: transabdominal (the probe is moved gently over the lower abdomen) and transvaginal (a small probe is inserted into the vagina for a closer view of the ovaries and uterus). Your sonographer will discuss which approach is most appropriate for you before the scan begins. In many cases, both techniques are used together to provide the most complete picture.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovaries. They are very common — most women will have at least one at some point in their lives — and the majority are benign and resolve on their own. However, some cysts cause symptoms such as pelvic pain, bloating, or irregular periods, and others may require monitoring or treatment.

Why Is Ultrasound Used to Assess Ovarian Cysts?

Ultrasound is the gold-standard imaging investigation for ovarian cysts. It can accurately measure the size of a cyst, assess its internal characteristics (whether it is simple and fluid-filled, or complex with solid components or septations), and help determine whether further investigation or follow-up is needed. This information is essential for guiding clinical decisions about management.

When you arrive for your private pelvic ultrasound at our Greenwich clinic, your experienced sonographer — working under the clinical leadership of a consultant radiologist — will take a brief clinical history and explain the procedure. You will be asked to lie on a comfortable examination couch. If a transabdominal scan is being performed, a small amount of warm ultrasound gel will be applied to your lower abdomen. The sonographer will then move the probe gently over the skin to obtain images.

What Should I Expect During the Scan?

If a transvaginal scan is recommended, the sonographer will explain the procedure fully and obtain your consent before proceeding. A small, smooth probe — covered with a sterile sheath and a small amount of gel — is gently inserted into the vagina. This provides a much clearer view of the ovaries and uterus than is possible from the abdomen alone. The procedure is generally well tolerated and should not be painful, though you may feel mild pressure.

Throughout the scan, the sonographer will be assessing the size, position, and appearance of your ovaries and uterus, and measuring any cysts that are identified. You are welcome to ask questions during the scan.

A standard pelvic ultrasound at our Greenwich clinic takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. If both transabdominal and transvaginal techniques are used, the appointment may take a little longer. You should allow around 45 minutes for your visit in total, including time to check in and discuss your results.

How Long Does the Scan Take?

For a transabdominal scan, you will be asked to attend with a full bladder, as this helps to push the bowel out of the way and provides a clearer view of the pelvic organs. Please drink approximately one litre of water in the hour before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder. For a transvaginal scan, an empty bladder is preferable.

At Radpid Diagnostics, all pelvic ultrasound scans are carried out by experienced sonographers working under the clinical leadership of a consultant radiologist. Your written report will be available on the same day as your scan and will be sent to you by email. If you have a GP or specialist, we can also send the report directly to them with your consent.

When Will I Receive My Results?

Your sonographer will be able to discuss the preliminary findings with you at the end of the scan. However, the formal written report — produced under the clinical leadership of a consultant radiologist and including their interpretation and any clinical recommendations — is the definitive result and will be provided the same day.

If you have been told by your GP or a hospital specialist that you may have an ovarian cyst, or if you are experiencing pelvic symptoms and are concerned, a private pelvic ultrasound offers several important advantages over waiting for an NHS appointment.
