What Is a Home X-ray and Who Needs One?

12 June 20265 min read

Mobile X-ray services bring diagnostic imaging directly to patients who cannot travel. Learn who benefits most and what to expect from a home X-ray visit.

A home X-ray service — also known as mobile or point-of-care radiography — brings professional diagnostic X-ray imaging directly to a patient's home, care facility, or workplace. Instead of the patient travelling to a hospital or clinic, a qualified HCPC-registered radiographer attends with portable digital X-ray equipment.

Home X-ray services are particularly valuable for elderly patients, those with limited mobility, care home residents, and anyone who finds it difficult or distressing to attend a hospital. They are also useful for patients who wish to avoid the risk of infection in a hospital environment.

The examination itself is identical to what you would receive in a hospital radiology department. The radiographer positions the patient, takes the X-ray using portable digital equipment, and the images are transmitted electronically to an accredited consultant radiologist for reporting.

Reports are available on the same day as your examination and can be shared with your GP or specialist. Urgent reporting is available for time-sensitive clinical situations.

At Radpid Diagnostics, our home X-ray service covers a 20-mile and 50-mile radius from our base in Dartford (DA2 6HH), serving London, Kent, and surrounding areas. We accept GP referrals and can assist with self-referral for patients who do not have a referral letter.

Common examinations performed at home include chest X-rays (for suspected pneumonia, heart failure, or other chest conditions), limb X-rays (for suspected fractures), and spine X-rays. Please see our full list of available examinations on our Home X-ray service page.
