An X-ray is a quick and painless diagnostic test that uses a small dose of radiation to capture images of the inside of your body. Your doctor or referring practitioner may recommend an X-ray if there is concern about pain, trauma, or disease in specific body areas.

What Can Be Detected on X-ray Examinations?

  • Cancers and Tumors
  • Enlarged Heart
  • Fluid in the Lungs
  • Bone Fractures
  • Dislocated Joints
  • Infections
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Foreign Objects – Such as those swallowed or lodged in the body

Quality Care & Reporting

All our X-ray scans are performed by experienced, HCPC-registered Radiographers, ensuring that you receive the highest level of care. The X-ray images are reviewed by registered radiologists or reporting radiographers, with findings provided to the referring physician for further action.

While X-rays are excellent for showing certain disease conditions or fractures, they do have some limitations. For example, muscles, blood vessels, and ligaments are not clearly visible on an X-ray scan, unless they are calcified.

However, X-rays are often the first imaging procedure recommended for patients experiencing pain. This is because doctors will want to first rule out any conditions that are visible on an X-ray, such as fractures or certain diseases.

If the X-ray results are inconclusive, your doctor may recommend further tests. These could include other diagnostic tools such as:

  • Ultrasound
  • CT Scan
  • MRI

While there are small risks associated with X-rays, they are only used when the benefit to the patient outweighs these risks. The amount of radiation used in X-ray imaging is minimal and considered safe when proper protocols are followed.

If you think you might be pregnant, please inform us before your appointment, as special precautions may be necessary.

On the appointment date, the radiographer will arrive at your home or abode and position you appropriately for the X-ray. To ensure safety, the radiographer may wear a lead apron and/or step back during the imaging process to avoid exposure to radiation.

During the X-ray, you will be asked to stay still. If the examination is for your chest, you may also be asked to take a deep breath in and hold it for a few seconds while the image is captured. This helps ensure a clear and accurate image.

No special preparation is required for your X-ray, but please wear plain, light clothing in the area being examined. If the X-ray is for a chest or pelvic area, you may be asked to remove any metal objects or jewelry.

If you are a woman who is pregnant or might be pregnant, please inform the radiographer before your appointment, as additional precautions may be necessary.

  • Carer Presence: We require that the patient’s carer be present during the home X-ray appointment to assist as needed. However, the carer will step back with the radiographer during the brief moments of X-ray exposure.
  • Lead Apron for Protection: If the patient is unable to remain still during the examination, the carer may be offered a lead apron to protect them from radiation.
  • Safety Precautions for Children and Pets: For safety reasons, children, minors, and pets are not allowed within the vicinity of the X-ray (the controlled area) during the procedure.

No, X-ray examination is not painful.

The process of taking an X-ray will only take a few seconds, but the radiographer may need to take additional X-rays from different positions to ensure all necessary images are captured. This, along with setup and clean-up times, means the full examination typically takes about 10-15 minutes for home visiting. If multiple body parts are being examined, it may take a bit longer.

After your X-ray is completed, the images will be reviewed by a consultant radiologist or reporting radiographer. Your referring doctor will receive the results and findings within same day of the exam being completed.
