Occupational Chest X-ray Surveillance — Why It Matters

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires employers in high-risk industries to implement health surveillance programmes for workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and other hazardous dusts. Chest X-ray is the primary radiographic tool for detecting early-stage occupational lung disease — including silicosis, pneumoconiosis, asbestosis, and coal workers' pneumoconiosis — before symptoms develop.

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, employers have a legal duty to arrange periodic health surveillance for at-risk workers. Radpid Diagnostics provides a fully compliant, consultant radiologist-led chest X-ray service that integrates seamlessly with your occupational health programme.

All examinations are performed under IR(ME)R 2017 regulations. Every referral — whether from an employer, occupational health provider, or HR department — is reviewed and authorised by a Radpid Diagnostics clinician to confirm clinical justification before the examination proceeds.

ILO / UICC Classification Reporting for Pneumoconiosis

Radpid Diagnostics offers ILO/UICC classification reporting — the internationally recognised standard for grading dust-related lung changes on chest X-ray. This is the reporting format required for formal pneumoconiosis surveillance in quarrying, slate production, ceramics, construction, and foundry workers.

Our consultant radiologists are experienced in occupational lung disease reporting and can provide ILO-classified reports suitable for submission to your occupational health provider, employer records, and HSE compliance documentation.

How Our Occupational Health X-ray Service Works

A straightforward, fully managed process from referral to report.

1

Contact us to discuss your requirements

Call 01322 914330 or email [email protected] to discuss your workforce screening needs — number of workers, industry, location, and preferred dates. We will confirm availability and provide a quote for individual or bulk bookings.

2

Referral and IR(ME)R authorisation

Referrals can be made by employers, occupational health providers, or HR departments. Under IR(ME)R 2017, all referrals are reviewed and authorised by a Radpid Diagnostics clinician to confirm clinical justification before any examination proceeds.

3

On-site or clinic-based X-ray examination

A HCPC-registered radiographer attends your workplace with portable digital X-ray equipment, or workers attend our clinic. A PA chest X-ray is taken as clinically indicated. The examination typically takes 10–15 minutes per worker.

4

Consultant radiologist-led reporting

Digital images are transmitted electronically for consultant radiologist-led reporting. ILO/UICC classification is available for pneumoconiosis surveillance. Written reports are issued the same day as the examination.

5

Secure report delivery

Written radiologist reports are delivered securely by email to the referring occupational health provider or employer. Reports are suitable for HSE compliance records, occupational health files, and pre-employment or exit medical documentation.
