Abdominal Pain and Ultrasound: What Can a Scan Reveal?

14 May 20266 min read

Persistent abdominal pain can have many causes. An ultrasound scan is often the first-line investigation. We explain what it can detect and how to access one quickly.

Abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons for GP consultations and hospital admissions. It can have many causes, ranging from benign conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome to more serious conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, appendicitis, or ovarian cysts.

Ultrasound is often the first-line imaging investigation for abdominal pain. It is safe, non-invasive, and can provide valuable information about the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and other abdominal organs.

Common findings on abdominal ultrasound include gallstones (a very common cause of right upper quadrant pain), kidney stones, liver cysts or lesions, enlarged lymph nodes, and free fluid in the abdomen.

At Radpid Diagnostics, we offer abdominal ultrasound at our Greenwich clinic and as a home visit service. No GP referral is required — you can self-refer directly. This means you can access expert diagnostic imaging quickly, without waiting for a GP appointment or NHS referral.

All ultrasound scans are performed by HCPC-registered sonographers and reported by an accredited consultant radiologist. Reports are available on the same day as your examination.

If you have persistent abdominal pain and would like a private ultrasound scan, contact us on 01322 914330 or book online. We offer same-day and next-day appointments at our Greenwich clinic and home visits within 20 miles of DA2.
