Chest X-ray for Chest Infections: When Is It Needed?

28 May 20264 min read

A chest X-ray can confirm pneumonia, rule out other conditions, and guide treatment. Find out when your GP might refer you for a chest X-ray.

A chest X-ray is one of the most commonly requested diagnostic investigations for patients with suspected chest infection. It can confirm the presence of pneumonia, identify the affected area of the lung, and help rule out other conditions such as pleural effusion or lung cancer.

Your GP may refer you for a chest X-ray if you have symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain that does not resolve with initial treatment. A chest X-ray can also be useful for monitoring the progress of a known chest infection.

The examination is quick and painless. You will be asked to stand (or sit, if you cannot stand) in front of the X-ray detector and take a deep breath. The radiographer will take one or two images, which takes only a few seconds.

At Radpid Diagnostics, we can perform chest X-rays at our Longfield clinic, at our patients' homes (within 20 or 50 miles of DA2), and at care facilities. This is particularly valuable for elderly patients or those with mobility difficulties who find it difficult to attend a hospital.

All chest X-rays are reported by an accredited consultant radiologist. Reports are available on the same day as your examination and can be shared with your GP to guide treatment decisions.

If you or a family member needs a chest X-ray, contact us on 01322 914330 or book online. We accept GP referrals and can assist with self-referral.
